W.J. Francis 1963. 74. Journal. June 24. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County. 0800 Weather clear and sunny, very light wind. Vegetation is dry, especially the grasses, but many forbs are green and some still flowering - noted particularly Erodium in wheel tracks of dirt road to the pump. This contrasts with San Luis Obispo County where all vegetation (except local moist spots) is completely dried and some even burned black. 0830 Serviced weather instruments. 0945 Started tour of the reservation to look & listen for any signs of quail. Report of John Davis, Keith White, and Jim Bell are that while adult pairs still are frequently seen, there have been no young seen and no evidence of successful nesting. 1337 Left Hastings for Berkeley, (mileage 41656) and arrived home at 1645 (mileage 41799). Total trip miles 550. June 25. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0855 Behaving like fox; weather clear and sunny, above the inversion which is visible as a haze horizon over the bay and coast. No wind
