June 23. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
p.m. car parked 100 feet from pump
with seepage flow, to determine
watering habits of local quail. A
flock of about 20 Lawrence Goldfinches
are feeding in the field directly in
front of me; left at 1740.
At 1842 parked close to pump
where I can see clearing around
the water clearly. At 1912, with
shadows covering the [illegible] area and
no signs at all of quail, I left the
area.
Excerpt from K. White Weather Log:
"27 May. Mon.... Heavy fog all week at
about 1000 to 4000 feet, sometimes higher,
more often lower. Many (25+) pairs
of Cal. quail seen on or alongside
roads this past week, which would
indicate there are not nesting yet -
crossed out..... Very little sun all week, only
occasionally, through thin hole in
fog.
"5 June 1963, .03" fog drip in vari
gage." End excerpt.
