W.J. Francis 1963. 71. Journal. June 22. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. large owl circled over me and dropped low as if to survey my food value, then moved off to the low hills to north where I saw another hunting. By their size they must be Great Horned Owls, although I could not make out shape a markings. June 23. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. about 0515 I stepped outside the tent; the light was sufficient to see fairly well, it being half an hour till dawn. Two owls came as seen last night, flew from large tree across the gully and circled low over me, very obviously inspecting me. They were seen to be Barn Owls - the large wing spread fooled us last night. Up at 1030 to go to the blind. Weather clear and cool, wind still moderate, stratus bank over the valley to the west. Heavy dew on tent and car, and on tops of grass stems. However, when walking down the pasture to reach the blind at Maria Spring, there was no dew at all on vegetation or ground.
