A number of gunshot, heavier than .22 caliber, have been heard to the west in the last few minutes. 1540 Filled water pool, left trickle running, and threw out more pigeon grains. June 20. Left home at Berkeley at 1030, mileage 41,249, and drove to Mc Millan Ranch, San Luis Orispo County, at 1800, mileage 41,489; delayed about 2 hours in Soledad for repairs to car starting motor. Set up camp in "Tree" area, to the north of the ridge beyond the ranch house. Grasses and moist weeds are quite dry and from now although shrunken perennials are retaining their green color. June 21.
