May 24. Devils Den, Kern County, Calif.
Morning Doves and a few Lark Sparrow
came to the area, some drinking. See
species account for Calif. Dove.
Wind in this area has been throughout
the period, and in most parts of
the area, very strong and turbulent,
estimated to average 25 knots with
gusts to 40, and not diminishing
at sundown. Doves were noted to
walk toward water sideways so
that they faced the wind as
they walked.
May 25 Devils Den, Kern County, 05-30
Weather cloudy with broken AC and
few ST patches, wind continuing
but less strong, averaging an
estimated 20 knots out of shelter
with gusts to 30, and cool.
Observing birds from upper water
dam, across ravine by lower
dam, up canyon by the
artificial roost, then over the
ridge and circled back around
ridge crests. Saw a single Chukar
at 0608 on a rocky ridge in the
ravine above the artificial
shelter. On return trip saw
two ravens diving a golden
