W.J. Francis 1963 43. Journal May 10, Hastings Reservation, Monterey County. down to pump in stream bed. 0840 Set out on more extensive tour of the reservation, but cancelled as rain started (moderate, steady) at 0850. Black-chinned Hummingbird and Vaux's Swift seen. Clearing at 1045 to BRN CO, Bright Sun. 1255 Started out again to tour possible quail areas interrupted by brief shower at 1315. Sky overcast, moderate turbulent wind. Intermittent light showers alternating with bright sunshine lasted during walk up Arnold Road above flat where quail were seen and heard. Last shower ended at 1515 as I started down the hill, reaching the main gate of the reservation at 1535. On the road to head quarters, observed a ? humming bird building a nest 15' above ground in a live-oak, until 1600. This tree is located 225' down the road from the 2500 marker. - Excerpts from weather log kept by K. White: "28 Mch 63 Thur. Rain began at noon 27 Mch as light drizzle, and heavier about 4-5 pm .... Gage ... ran over the one inch glass tube so no reading.
