Maclan 1964 Journal to transfer him, then set 12 snap traps beyond end of runway. A few burrows looked active, but no real good sign. Traps set in scrub willow area near stock. Returns to Barterpunt and, finding this closed, spent evening until 11:30 P.M. in bar. Sun went down ca. 9:00 - real night, dark, stars, etc. We'd almost forgotten what night is like. (Should have a pretty good idea by this time next year). 27 July Barrow, Alaska Got up at 4:30 A.M. in King Salmon, after sleeping in back of R.A.D. Sun rose there at 4:00. Went down to the river and took a fish and game outboarded skiff down river about 3 miles (we thought we were going up river, but... technicalities.) River here is about 220 yds. wide and 10 feet deep - the Macknee River (sp?). Dense willow groves line the river on either side, with either spruce forest or muskeg beyond that. Fro up the boat and walked along shore and then inland a bit. Wild flowers are at their peak - especially fire-
