Spends the rest of the evening preparing materials for trip to Fairbanks and work at the U. of A. 24 August Barrow to Fairbanks, Alaska Had to stay close in the morning for the flight which finally got away after lunch. Flew with Harvey Widler in a Cessna 180. [His pig of a girlfriend was mad because she didn't get to go.] Flew low for the first hour or so. Saw lots of caribou, one flock of ca. 25 black brants - no owls, no jaguars. Several flocks of shorebirds could not be identified. Went up above clouds, then landed at Anaktuvuk to deliver drum of white gas. It was rainy but warm in the Pass - people as friendly as ever. Only a brief stop, then off again, flying low. The hardwoods below timberline were in beautiful fall colors. It is funny that the Anaktuvuk people could move but a few miles to be at timberline with
