MacLean
1966
23 August
Barrow, Alaska
Loaded the vessel for a full day
trip, then drove into town with Tom
to pick up Eona and Eurice. After
stop along beach for sling-shot
ammunition, drove our gasoline Racer
to Voth Area. I brought along a
Semi-pal with a broken wing and
empty stomach to try a timeo
feeding experiment. Released bird
along pond edge. He showed interest
in feeding, but was obviously acting
abnormally. Killed it and pickled
stomach after 30 minutes.
Drove across Footprint lake and
stopped by slo (well vegetated) polygons
just west of lake. Spent an hour or
so just digging up tundra, looking for
tipulio larvae plus whatever else was
there. Found larvae again in mossy
hummocks. Also found adult Carabios
down in the ground at 2 to 4 cm.
These were dumped in distribution;
2 to 5 animals were found in close
proximity where Carabios were found.
This is probably a behavioral process,
as there was no evident habitat
feature which might cause dumping.
