19 August
Barrow, Alaska
Up early to run the traplines.
Drove to Birnirk to pick up Eona,
Max, Bobby, and Price Brower, then
drove out to lines VII and VIII. Amazing-
found 2 lemmings in VII, 3 longspurs in
VIII. Another Lemmus in VI, plus 5
longspurs from the ridge lines. Longspur,
catch has been very high this run,
and the birds are quite abundant.
Crossed Wolfslag Slough and
drove our towards gas well. Saw
scattered pectorals and red-backs -
mostly in groups of 2 to 5. Actually
got a couple of feeding observations.
Away from the immediate coast
semi-pals are definitely not seen. They
were abundant in brackish ponds
at Birnirk, but none were seen
in lands.
On return trip along East edge
of Holmes' Morass saw another group
of pintails - 5 this time. They are
exceedingly common this year. Also two
groups of 5 and 7 Bowitzers.
Weather was best in a long while, and
I saw a good number of small
muscio flies in the air. These were
