Maclean 1966 13 July Barrow, Alaska Slept late to recover from last night's late trip to the tundra, then spent the rest of the morning trying to get a functional wessel. After lunch loaded the vacuum sampler into the wessel with Mike, Tom, and Jackie Campbell and drove out to Voth Area, near her wind nets. Stopped by well vegetated polygonal area and discovered Tipula carinifera abundant on polygons. FF are wingless, and were quite conspicuous ovipositing on polygon slopes. ♂♂ (winged) tended to be more around polygon troughs - below ♀♀. Saw numerous pairs in copulation. Often a ♀♀ was surrounded by up to 6 or 7 ♂♂, frequently copulating w/ 1. Other ♀♀ were solitary. [see sp. account] Spent much time crawling after various insects. Wind stopped around this time and mosquitoes came out in force. Most abundant I have seen at Barrow, but far below inland sites. Tried the vacuum sampler without too much success. The engine kept quitting, and it didn't seem to be getting very much. Finally
