Weather looked like it might clear, and
soon did leaving a beautiful day -
moderate wind, bright sun, etc. The
adult diptera were flying in force all
day. Went beyond village dump
to area where first large tributary
meets Nunivak Slough to make first
stop. Stopped in the middle of a burst
of Semi-pal activity similar to that
seen Wednesday with Dr. Kessel. Collected
four birds. Also a pair of red-backs -
probably with young, in the area.
Bumble bees and adult tipulids were
evident. Failed to catch any bees, but
began a tipulid collection for caloric
determination. Spent time photographic
flowers, of which there are more in
bloom than near camp - 2 spp. Draba,
2 spp. Saxifraga, Papaver, 2 spp.
Pedicularis, 2 spp. Ranunculus,
Potentilla, and more. Followed
Slough, as before, to assure a
landmark as we drove further.
Made a short stop, then a major
stop about 7 miles from Barrow.
There saw and collected a 07 white-
rump. Diko found a remarkable
concentration of collembolans resulting
