from flock of ca. 5 white-rumps and
7 peotocals (Maclean 285, 289), lone ♀
giving distraction display (284), and 3 birds
from flock of ca. 25 white-rumps (286, 287,
288). Found Buff-Breast near hatching,
and took 1 chick. Activity good, but nothing
near previous evening.
Returned ano, but for one brief foray,
spent evening in lab working on specimens
and shooting heel slit.
17 July
Barrow, Alaska
Went out to Gasline Ridge to
check traps and see what could be seen.
Buff Breasts and chicks have left nest. Flock of
white-rumps still around. Otherwise, all
quiet. Saw number of broods of chicks or
peas to any fee. Old Squaw has deserted.
took egg - no embryo. Returned ano
spent rest of day putting up 6 white-rumps,
jaegers, and murrel chick.
18 July
Barrow, Alaska
Spent day setting traplines to keep from
getting too far behind. Went with Stevens
and Logsdon in morning to set 5 and 6; after
lunch Logsdon decided to take a nap,
so Stevens and I set 13 and 14, and 8
and 7. While en route saw ♀ Buff-Breast
with chicks; likewise Brant and 2 clutches
