of high population density. Took 8 soil cores for Berlese extraction - hopefully obtaining beasts for caloric determination. Returned to camp and started there in funnels, than drank a beer before dinner. After evening repast finished up stomachs, then went out to Gasline Ridge with Tom Custer, our lemming trapper. Found a red-back nest 6 feet West of I - 0.8; a pre-staked nest. Saw a good chase of 2 or Pectorals after a 4. Heard a Dowitcher displaying, and saw 3 birds flying. Also saw a Dowitcher flying over drum area. Walked down to pond area South of ridge, but no phalaropes - in fact, not much anything. Took 12 more SOD samples, then returned and dropped these into Berlese's. Spent rest of evening on notes and reading. 21 June Barrow, Alaska Made it up for breakfast, but also made it back to the rack for a few more. Spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon on stomachs, wadset problems, and preparing the vacuum insect sampler for use. the old collecting
