Naelson 1966 Spent some time with Phil looking at the dunes. they are obviously very active; could see blow-outs in all stages of stabilization, places where Dunes were covering tundra vegetation, buried soil horizons - all sorts of interesting things. By this time it was raining, and pretty cold and winy, so in we came. Spent the rest of the evening on notes and bird bodies, and talking with Phil. 19 June Needle River Coal Mine to Barrow, Alaska Blueberry pancakes - a good way to start any day. Went downstream with Ray, dropping trash en route. Stopped on East side of River, beyond spot of evening of 17th. Same river terrace topography. Semi-pale in area, but not as conspicuous as 17th - may be part of diurnal pattern. Black-bellied plover pair on ridge gave v. good distraction display when we were >150 m. away! Two yrs, yellow wagtails and several singing Savannah Sparrows also seen. Collected several Old Squaws for Ray's family and looked at old sod houses on dry terrace, then headed back to be in camp for 1:30 P.M. radio contact.
