17 June Meade River Coal Mine, Alaska
Up early to try my hand at
blueberry pancakes. Modesty prevents
my relating the results. After
writing a few more notes, took to the
field with Paul, this time on the
village (North) side. Opportunity
for good scientific B.S. as well as
habitat study.
Saw turnstones in village, but they
are limited to garbage dump, and are
not of much use. Walked the low,
marshy river terrace north of the
village. Last August I had expected
this to be prime habitat. My
expectations were not exactly born
out. In the 1 mile + of this marsh
there were perhaps 8 pairs of snipes
and 4 of pectorals. Also saw 2 ot
and 24 dowitchers (all separate
encounters), and both Northern and
Red Phalaropes. As Paul has said,
the vegetation and land form there
will make feeding observations on
some species quite difficult. I
