16 June Barrow to Meade River Coal Mine (Athasuke), Alaska
Awoke for breakfast, then finished
the interrupted night's sleep. Spent most of
morning looking at yesterday's stomachs.
Phalaropes from are pond (3 birds) were
full of adult Plecoptera. Baird was full
of tipulid larvae - not surface stuff at all.
Walked our into Drum area briefly and
listened to Bairds. After lunch threw some
gear together and headed for plane for
Meade River. Flew in 22X with Guy Shipars.
Went by way of the Post-Rogers monument
and took some pictures, then another
15-20 miles down coast before turning South.
Tundra near Barrow is about 10% snow
covered and 65% water covered. Large
lakes, as Hersowik, are still solid ice
with surface melt ponds. Route missed
the Inaru, so we couldn't judge snow
conditions there.
Saw no owls and only 3 jaegers
all the way down. Meade River
area is virtually snow free except
for river bluffs. The grounds is not
too wet, although Paul says much
of the melt water has disappeared
in the 3 days he was gone.
Spent some time looking at
