Maelan 1966 16 June Barrow to Meade River Coal Mine (Athasuke), Alaska Awoke for breakfast, then finished the interrupted night's sleep. Spent most of morning looking at yesterday's stomachs. Phalaropes from are pond (3 birds) were full of adult Plecoptera. Baird was full of tipulid larvae - not surface stuff at all. Walked our into Drum area briefly and listened to Bairds. After lunch threw some gear together and headed for plane for Meade River. Flew in 22X with Guy Shipars. Went by way of the Post-Rogers monument and took some pictures, then another 15-20 miles down coast before turning South. Tundra near Barrow is about 10% snow covered and 65% water covered. Large lakes, as Hersowik, are still solid ice with surface melt ponds. Route missed the Inaru, so we couldn't judge snow conditions there. Saw no owls and only 3 jaegers all the way down. Meade River area is virtually snow free except for river bluffs. The grounds is not too wet, although Paul says much of the melt water has disappeared in the 3 days he was gone.
