MacLean

along the ridge without stepping on snow.
Collected a few observations until my
wet feet got cold, then walked to road
and rode in on returning wedge.
14 June
Barrow, Alaska
Spent the morning on notes and
stomachs. Pitelka brought in 5 Semi-pals
and a turnstone to go with my birds.
After lunch drove to Pitelka's
Plot, then walked around Holmes'
Marass to Elean Lagoon with Niko.
The ridge is now good walking; the
marass is a quagmire of water and
slush. Collected a few observations
on and around the plot, but hurried
to spend most of the afternoon by
Elean Lagoon. Red-backs and phalampes
were frequent there, and we collected
a good number of observations. Failed
to turn up the hoped-for pectorals.
Turnstones were active near the nest
Niko had found earlier. As he checked
this I found another w/ 4 eggs ca. 150 m.
S.E., and then another w/ 4 eggs
<50 m. S.E. — 3 nests within 150 m!
It was getting late, so we waded
straight across the Marass and managed
the trip without going in above our boots.
