Maclenn 1966 Voth Area - 3 walkers Cake Eater side, Niko E. side of road. Another dispersing Group of ca. 15 redbacks here. Also 1 semi-pal, pair of turnstones, pair of golden plovers. Took feeding observations then collected semi-pal near road. Quit and came in just as Pitzelka was landing at Barrow after dropping supplies at Meade due to poor condition of strip. Finished stomachs and put up semi-pal, then returned to field after dinner. Now below freezing, with the same strong wind from the N.E. took soil cores along and collected 7 soil cores. Permafrost was just below surface, so cores were shallow. Should, I discovered, use cans to bring in cores to preserve their positional integrity. Group of ca. 60 redbacks now quite cohesive in Cake Eater area - flying actively. Vegetation, even at this early stage, is showing definite signs of activity. Saw first P willow buds on 4 June. Today saw developing Pedicularis - ca. 1 inch high. In several places
