MacLean 1966 reducing visibility. First to Beach Ridge, where Baird's were seen and heard in good numbers - probably at least 3007 - plus red-backs. Melt still further advanced, and remaining snow is very soft and wet. In best area top of ridge is ca. 40% exposed. Drove across Central Marsh to Pitelka's Plot - there only a few quiet red-backs. Here - as other sites- Longspurs were quiet. Went over to Gasoline Ridge - again quieter. 2 prs. of red-backs - one good chase. On to Voth area - it has greatly opened up in the past two days. Flora across from Cake Eater is 75% exposed, with abundant activity. Apparently a group of ca. 10 red-backs was newly arrived and beginning to disperse. 2 prs. of semi-pals - both off displaying. 1 pr. Turnstones, 8 Bairdii, and 1 golden plover also in the area. Collected 3 red-backs, then drove in via gasoline road. After lunch more equipment procurement, then went over system for recording feeding observations. Prepared new instruction sheets.
