'cept we didn't bring enough
mosquito repellent. Heaved for
Throawik from village, stopping at
owl nests enroute. No hurry - no
set plan. Saw ca. 250 glaucous
gulls on South part of foot print
lake. Saw flock of black bellies
placed by indor as N. end of throawik.
Captured jaeger with broken wing,
and got face cut open handling the
beast! Deserves it!
Drove + walked down West
side of Throawik observing and
collecting shorebirds. Saw frequent
broods of red-back chicks; 1 brood
of phalaropes; evidence of golden
gloves. No other shorebirds w/
young - and no Bairds or semi-pals
seen all day. Collected 5 pectorals,
1 red-back, 2 golden plovers. Seems :
every red-back seen has chicks, and
my soft heart worn out. Should get
enough chicks in traplines.
Red-backs seen with chicks were
in low, wet, flat stuff. Few seen
without, are acting as if incubating, or
higher, well drained tundra.
