way home - let us get to about 150 m.
before flying.
Was impressed by lack of Arctic Terns -
possibly due to ice cover on lakes. Hersawik,
accept for ca. 150-30m. near around
perimeter, is completely ice-covered. Few
loons or near, but otherwise nothing around.
Also saw fewer sabines, probably because
colay was not located.
On way in observe large ice pile-up
on beach. In one place blocks of ice 12-3 ft.
thick and to 10 ft. dia. piles ca. 25 feet high.
Major pile-up extends ca. 200 m. by South
Salt Lagoon. Other lesser piles along beach.
Biggest pile extends onto beach about 50 feet -
tremendous pressure required to move that
weight of ice around. Open water about 100m.
our - do squaws, few Steller's Eier [illegible].

Barrow, Alaska
Waited for visitor until 2:15, then gave
up and went out to set lines V + VI and
VII + VIII. VII + VIII, in central marsh, are
very wet - sat. to standing water our entire
length of lines - and devoid of sign.
Central Marsh is now empty of birds -
The change seems remarkable! Lanning
right on V + VI is better - few live animals
seen. Not too much more in bird life.
