Journal rests forms today were predated. I am sure that the least weasel is a significant lemming predator. After dinner went out to trophies 9+10 with Hamilton. Bird life fairly quiet, except for one burst of white-rump activity. AACS golden Plover flock now numbers 23, sitting quietly. 3 July Barrow, Alaska Went out through drum area and encountered Bob Bigges, Eagle Scout. Decided to explore new territory to see if shorebirds are moving in. Covered polygonal area N. of Beach Ridge—nothing. Checked two- back pair on N. slope of ridge but couldn’t fire nest. Saw three cranes in Central Marsh— one performing courtship dance. Watched, then tried to approach, but birds flew. Back to low polygons by NE corner of ridge. Found phalarope nest, 7 eggs. Pair of western sandpipers in area, but probably not nesting. Continues to slope between C+6S and POW site—zero. Same for polygons below. Last year this was a good area. Returns through polygons and Fresh Lake marsh—barren. Spent evening in town.
