Journal improve - ca. 38° with much less wind. Has expected an improvement in weather To bring sudden burst of shorebirds display. Didn't work out that way. This convinces me that this will simply be a lousy year for shorebirds, priso. Saw some red-back display, but not much more. Found moderately good fleeing behavior in same area as last night - near Brant Point. Two pr. Sabine's Gulls, first Yellow-Billed Loon. In the evening went to Nalakutuk in Village - really outstanding! Barrow, Alaska A good evening and day of melt have brought the tundra about to June 9 or so last year. Went out to Voth area with Pitelka to observe and collect shorebirds. Did fairly well, although even under perfect conditions heard amazingly little display. First Pectoral aerial display, plus white-rumps, red-backs, and Semi-pals. The only birds which appears to be comparatively numerous are rusty turnstones. Saw first Arctic terns and
