Maclean 1965 Journal mouth of Wohlslag Slough. Looks like cold, windy, miserable weather of past 4+ days may have discouraged them by making lemming hunting more difficult. Some territorial aggression within flocks indicates that they haven't give up entirely. Many (ca. 1/2) of birds sitting quietly; others standing or hunting in nearby area. Observed owl in dracula display with lemming in mouth by S. end of Beach Ridge. Checked nest- formerly 11 eggs, now 9. In same area observed (rejoice!) 2 magnificent red-backed sandpipers feeding actively on melted patch of tundra. Saw total of 9 red-backs, 3 turnstones, 1 golden plover, 1 ot pectoral. Spring has come at last. Continues to East edge of Holmes' Morass to observe owls. Observed 1 beautiful rotating dracula. Surplus of birds in area - 6 visible in 180° turn from edge of lagoon - indicates non-breeding individuals mixed with obviously breeding birds. Weather foggy, but above freezing with much less wind.
