Maclean 1965 Journal No other nests forms. Founs recently killed and partially eaten & ptarmigan. Another (live) ♀ ptarmigan on Pitelka's Plot. No shorebirds of any kind seen. Caught a number of lemmings - they are much larger than any I've seen previously. Jaegers seem to be pairing off and have begun territorial squabbling. Making noise for first time. Still no interaction w/ owls. Arrival of shorebirds is later than I has expected. Actually, this is good, since it means we don't miss so much by arriving in early June. Longspurs are still seen mostly in flocks. Snow buntings seem to be paired. 31 May Barrow, Alaska Beach Ridge very quiet, so on to Gasline Ridge. Pretty quiet here, too! Walked length of ridge without seeing a shorebird. Owls 3 still on top of ridge above mounds where I gave distraction display yesterday. Determined definitely that new nest belongs to pair occupying W end of ridge, including big mounds at end of
