Maclean 1965 Journal Here. Lemming sign extremely abundant on Gasline Ridge - large areas 100% cut. Animals very abundant. Pair of owls beyond N. end of traplines believed to be nesting or ready to start nesting. Saw first shorebirds of year - Golden Plovers. Much lemming sign and many lemmings seen around CREEL area of Beach Ridge. Less signs and no lemmings seen on Pitelka's Plot. 30 May Barrow, Alaska Our again to check ridges. Essentially no melt in past 3 days; ridges and mounds are only exposed tundra. Shar-ears, owl seems to have moved on - again not on Beach Ridge. Observed breeding behavior of Snowy Owls on Gasline Ridge, then located owl nest w/ 4 eggs. Continued NE along edge of Central Marsh. Found several piles of dead lemmings - piles of 34 and 50 c.a. 65 m. apart; another pile of 30 c.a. 400 m. beyond. Believes to be work of Pomerine Jaegers. Owls very evenly spaced and consistently paired.
