Maclean 1965 Journal supplies and hauled them to camp by river, then waited for Melchior and Phelps (Univ. of Wisc.) to finish writing letters. This area will really be tremendous come summer. Nearly a complete variety of arctic habitats - river bar, low meadows, tussock meadows, ridges, cliffs - the works! From Melchior's descriptions, the variety of bird life matches this. According to his description, all of the Barrow Californians nest here - but in different habitats. Could be interesting comparisons. Hope to get down here later to have a look. 14 May Barrow, Alaska Flock of ca. 80 Eiders circled over village airstrip. 16 May Barrow, Alaska Went out to check N. Meadow Lake owl nest. Dow 4 eggs in snow cup on mound. Part of mound exposed, but area is essentially 100% snow covered. ♀ flew from nest when we were ca. 100 m. away - flew 200 m, then sat on oil drum.
