letters.
This area will really be tremendous
come summer. Nearly a complete
variety of arctic habitats - river bar,
low meadows, tussock meadows, ridges,
cliffs - the works! From Melchior's
descriptions, the variety of bird life
matches this. According to his
description, all of the Barrow
Californians nest here - but in
different habitats. Could be interesting
comparisons. Hope to get down here
later to have a look.

Flock of ca. 80 Eiders circled
over village airstrip.

Went out to check N. Meadow
Lake owl nest. Dow 4 eggs in snow
cup on mound. Part of mound
exposed, but area is essentially
100% snow covered. ♀ flew from nest
when we were ca. 100 m. away - flew
200 m, then sat on oil drum. Did
not want to overly disturb birds during
