out the matter with Holmes and Pitelka,
and finally works out a problem that
is specific enough to grasp, broad enough
to be useful in more than one sense, wise
enough to, if desired, at least begin direction
toward a Doctoral program, and flexible
enough to be dissected into component parts
which can produce results alone. (What
you want, fellow, isn't a problem. What
you want is a tinker toy!)
Problem: Niche differentiation in sympatric
congeneric species of sandpipers.
Hypothesis: the species of Caliparin
sandpipers breeding locally may differ in:
a) time budget (esp. pectoral v. others)
b) resting habits
c) feeding habitat
d) feeding technique
e) food taken.
Methods:
A. What's here - investigation of insect fauna,
from point of view of potential bird prey.
1) Besleze funnel and/or hand
picked 500 samples.
2) Vacuum for surface insects.
3) Life histories of major components
of insect fauna.
All this section put off into future.
