Maclean 1965 Journal 7 May The whaling gear consists of a brass harpoon gun, vintage 1860-70 and a hand harpoon which releases similar exploding harpoons. These supposedly explode ca. 10 sec. after the impact with the whale has triggered a fuse. In practice, they are extremely unreliable; 50% exploding would be a good average. Also around are conventional steel blades harpoons attached to inflated seal-skin pokes. These act as floors to hinder the dives of wounded whales and help prevent dead whales from sinking. There are numerous rifles around for seals, and shotguns for ducks. 8 May Barrow, Alaska Remains at whale camp, hoping young ice would move away to open up lead. No such luck. Ice underwent lateral slippage and pressure rigging, but became more tightly packed. About 1000 bowhead of medium size came up in open pond in young ice, ca. 50 m. out. Blew 8 times, then submerged.
