Maelan 1965 Journal 30 April Barrow, Alaska Begun summer season field notes with the arrival of the first snow buntings. Saw 3 or 7 in breeding plumage flying around Barrow Village. Made no audible sound. And a cheery sight, it was. 2 May Barrow, Alaska Walked out to Don Nasunginya's whale camp - about 1 1/2 miles straight out from village. Saw 3 or 7 snow buntings in village dump on ice near shore. Some "chipping" noises, but no song. Climbed over 25 ft. pressure ridge to reach camp on edge of shore ice. Ice extends to limit of visibility - ca. 4 miles. One whale seen ca. 200 m. out. No pursuit. Saw flock of 12 geese (wing-beat too slow for ducks) flying NE up lead. Whalers reported seeing flocks of ducks - can't get any quantitative estimate out of them. A few belugas have been seen and shot at - none killed. Weather - cold and winy. Ca. +10° F, fog caused by heavy lead smoke, waves coming onto ice. 5 May Barrow, Alaska Walked out to Vincent Nageak's
