Journal of ca. 100+ glaucous gulls along bank and floating on open water of Voth slough. Snowy Owls still at cake-eater. Groups of 3 - 20 red phalaropes feeding in ocean, next to shore, in circle patterns. That's all. 11 September Barrow, Alaska large numbers of Old Squaws seen flying South, very low over ocean, ca 1/8 to 1/4 mi. out. Frequent lone glaucous gulls flying along shoreline. 12 September Barrow, Alaska Hemming hunting, again as before. Colour (ca. 30°). Fewer gulls, but in same place. Same jaegers, etc.. 14 September Barrow, Alaska Failure to regulate temperature in animal house causes death of 1/2 of dlemmings. Went out with Kris Motes (working for USC - Gentle's replacement an ARUS) to try to replenish colony. Weekends have been a/o - 10° - 25° 20° today. Grounds was now frozen solid. Could no longer stamp dlemmings out of burrows. Hunted two hours in Voth Area......... not a damn dlemming. Crossed Central Marsh - not too much sign there. Saw flock of ca.
