7 September
Barrow, Alaska
Went out with Dick Hill director
of "Canadien Act" at Anvik. Found
13 lemmings in traps. Closed up line,
and moved some to drier area in
hopes of catching Dicrostonyx. I'm
curious when change to winter pelage
occurs.
Saw 3 Pomarine jaegers, 1
glaucous gull, flight of 4 dowitels,
and 1 phalarope. Large gulls have all
departed; snow buntings still seen
occasionally.
Returned and processed part of
lemming kill, then wrote notes.

Barrow, Alaska
Our "lemming snatching" with Riley
Sikvayugak. Went out to Voth area.
Ground has a frozen "crust", but not
yet frozen solid. Sign still abundant,
and lemmings easily caught. Brought
in 16 for ca. 1½ hrs. work.
Two immature pomarine jaegers
still hanging around Voth area,
gorging themselves. Large, loose flock
