9 June
Barrow, Alaska
Arrived at 4:15 P.M. via Wien. Too
late to get any gear, so the tundra will
have to wait. Checked into the tundra
Hilton and the luxury lab suites that
have replaced aerology. Spent some time
shooting it with Holmes, then racked out.
10 June
Barrow, Alaska
Checked out some clothes, then spent the
morning surveying the Tundra with Holmes.
Melt off has proceeded farther than 1.5
sight last year; the Beach Ridge is ca. 85%
exposed. The lakes, marbles, and low
points are pretty much covered, but it
looks like it has softened up. Not much
melting going on now - it's about 30°,
with strong, consistent wind from N.E..
Ponos are ice over, and snow is crushed.
The Lab is out of gloves and my hands
are cold !!!
Followed main road to AACS, then cut
across to South Beach Ridge, and walked
down ridge toward Micro-Met. White Bugs
appear to be most abundant, and are
extremely active - in chasing interspecifically
(groups of 2-5) and intraspecifically
(Pectoral and Bairds). Pectorals
abundant (e.g., 2/3 w.r.); Bairds frequent
