4 August Cape Thompson, Alaska
Got the word this morning that
Today was the day for Thompson flight,
so hurry up and wait! Spent morning
packing gear, then went out and closed
owl traps on beach ridge. First call:
1:30, then 2:30, then 3:00. Finally made
it at 4:00, and darn near got left
behind at that. Flew along the coast
all the way in beautiful, clear water.
Good view of camp, but flew directly
over the village. Took a roll of film,
then discovered that camera was acting
up again. Screwed it up thoroughly
trying to see exactly what's wrong.
Circled over bird cliffs and landed
at 6:30. The place is really something!
Will save description for tomorrow. Ate
dinner, then unloaded gear. Fog came
in just as plane left, but went out
soon after. We took over UGS
jameway hut and set up mouse equipment,
then walked down beach a bit. Saw
Semi-palmated Sandpiper, flights of
Murres, kittiwakes. Came back, B.S.'d
with "permanent" summer residents, then
tried to sleep while estimates got juices on
bear we'd brought in.
