West Walker River, Wilson Canyon, 4900 ft., Lyon Co., Nevada
(no. 239 & JRL) within four feet of
the water of the river among
many rocks and willows a trap
was set and baited with a small
bird and this spotted sburb
was caught. I approached it
slowly, untied the trap from
its object of a log and carried
the spotted sburb to water
where I put it into the
water & held onto the chain
to keep the trap & animal
from going down with the
current. The animal soon
drowned and after I was sure
it was dead it!! I took it out
of the river. At no time did
it emit any odor but as I
approached, it would stamp
its feet, and aim its back
muzzle at me but after I
was quiet a few minutes it
would settle down so I could
handle it. One must go very
carey & slow to kill them
in this way but it is worth
it as they do not usually strike.
