Lepus californicus
W slope Granite Range, 6000 ft, 13 mi. N and 6 mi. W.
Deephole, Washoe Co., Nevada. Aug. 30, 1940
In this location, the edge of a
valley, where a few antelope
[illegible] and horses water at a
small spring, I was leaning
against the bank of the wash.
Being in the shade of the bank,
and making no movement I
was apparently not noticed
by a Jackrabbit that appeared
on the opposite bank of the wash
not more than 50 feet from me.
This jackrabbit "zig zagged" down
the 10 ft. slope of the wash
by short gentle hops, and it
appeared to be in no hurry. When
it approached the edge of the water
it stretched its neck out, apparently
as far into the spring as possible,
and drank for a minute or so, then
it turned and with great speed ran
up onto the bank where it
stopped and looked about then
leisurely hopped out into the
sagebrush. I do not believe this
Jackrabbit was aware of my
presence. It was 7:05 A.M by my watch.
