J. R. Alcorn 1936 Citellus townsendi mollis Feb. 13. 1936 4 to 8 mi. W of Fallon 4,000 ft., Churchill County, Nevada The Uinte Ground Squirrel appeared above ground today for the first time this year. May 19 1936 During the past two weeks I have ob- served a number of wet squirrels along the canal banks. I find these squirrels seem to want to move to different ground and a number of them deliberately swim across these canals which are running full of water. Some are 40 feet across which is quite a swim for a squirrel that likes dry land. Around the alfalfa fields these squirrels are getting very fat now and the young ones are growing very fast. These squirrels are very plentiful in the valley (Fallon, Nev.) and in the sagebrush and low hills. Like the Pocket Gophers here those around and in the alfalfa fields are larger than those in the sagebrush in the hills. Some of the ranchers while irrigating report killing 8 or 10 in one hole by drowning them out. Today I saw two blackbirds attack a Turkey Vulture that was flying about overhead. Vulture vomited twice losing. Copied from original notes by Mrs. J.R.A.
