Alcorn 1940 Citellus beldingi 3 mi W Swan Lake, Swan Lake Valley, 4300 ft, Klamath Co., Oregon May 9, 1940. This morning I shot six squirrels & set about 25 rat traps at entrances of burrows. These traps yielded about 8 squirrels today. The young squirrels are appearing above ground but apparently are not venturing very far from the entrance of the burrows. According to a rancher here these squirrels were numerous here about five years ago, but poisoning has made them hard to find. Only in favored locations, one is able to find a few burrows. May, 10, 1940. Today I shot 4 young squirrels with one 4/0 gauge No. 12 shot shell. They were all clustered around one burrow.
