J.R. Alcorn 1936. Vulpes macrotis 18 mi. S + 1 mi. E Fallon, 4300 ft., Churchill Co., Nevada. Sept. 28 1936 No 95 J.R.D. This desert fox was caught in a large trap(no.?) that broke its leg and the animal was dead when found. The trap was set in a small wash and baited with coyote scent. Prior to this date I have caught twenty or thirty of these animals in Churchill, Pershing- and Humboldt Counties[1]. Many times they die soon after being caught. On one occasion I caught one of these foxes in a trap and the Coyotes tore the animal to pieces,[according to tracks as evidence], and all I could find was the tail, some back fur and the coyote tracks covered every foot of ground 2 mi. E Stillwater for 50 ft. back from the trap. I believe the Coyotes carried the remains of the fox away into the desert (See Coyote species acct.) 1936? Month? I know of one fox den that was 9 mi. from the nearest water(South Walker lake?) The adult apparently traveled this 9 miles in search of food for the young because grebe, Coot and other waterfowl remains were found at the entrance of the den.
