BIRDS - NEW CALEDONIA L. Macmillan Page 121 TAO AREA: Coastal NW, Mountains, (Mt. Panie Area.) 3 to 4 thousand feet: All bird life which reached this altitude seemed to be more plentiful and there seemed to be a zone of birds reaching down more from the mountain top in this area. Species recorded in the area were: Haliastur: Circus: Phaenorhina: Gerygone: Pachycephala p.c.: Corvus: Myzomela: Zosterops x. 4 to 4 1/2 thousand feet: This area appears to be like that lower down in that it is somewhat indeterminate and in the valleys taller trees cause a reaching downwards of the zone above. Bird life was very scarce, Myzomela only appearing abundant. This may have been because we were compelled to keep to the scanty scrubbed ridges. I make a few notes on the species but till I have made further investigations in the area I would prefer to leave these incomplete notes open. Summit area: We were such a short time on the summit that it would not be worth while making full notes of this area and such observations as were made will be found under the species concerned in that of other zones at lower levels.
