BIRDS - NEW CALEDONIA L. Macmillan Page 78
Wailu River Valley
Wednesday, 14th June, 1939.
Weather: Fine sunny early, showers later in day. Clouds
from 30 to 80%. Light SE wind.
Habitat: Dense mimosa scrubs, reeds and generally dense
river valley bottom scrubs, average height 10 to 15 ft. with
many taller trees up to 30ft. here and there.
Birds: The usual run of birds seen and behaviour was usual.
Megalurus: Another nesting pair were seen but the nest was
not found. Saw the nesting pair chasing each other about and
both flew up into a fairly dense tree and were fully 12 ft.
above the ground, but soon returned to the lower and usual
levels. This is by far the highest I have ever seen this
species.
Haliastur
Pandion: One seen flying high. Circus: One seen hawking at
a distance over heath lands.
Porphyrio: One heard calling in dense reeds in river margin
swamp just after a gun shot. Trichoglossus: Two small flocks
of 8 and 3 were seen and heard flying over very high up.
