BIRDS - NEW CALEDONIA L. Macmillan Page 78 Wailu River Valley Wednesday, 14th June, 1939. Weather: Fine sunny early, showers later in day. Clouds from 30 to 80%. Light SE wind. Habitat: Dense mimosa scrubs, reeds and generally dense river valley bottom scrubs, average height 10 to 15 ft. with many taller trees up to 30ft. here and there. Birds: The usual run of birds seen and behaviour was usual. Megalurus: Another nesting pair were seen but the nest was not found. Saw the nesting pair chasing each other about and both flew up into a fairly dense tree and were fully 12 ft. above the ground, but soon returned to the lower and usual levels. This is by far the highest I have ever seen this species. Haliastur Pandion: One seen flying high. Circus: One seen hawking at a distance over heath lands. Porphyrio: One heard calling in dense reeds in river margin swamp just after a gun shot. Trichoglossus: Two small flocks of 8 and 3 were seen and heard flying over very high up. SK. No. 56. ZOSTEROPS lat. Zosterops lateralis: Male AD., 1/2 plus (white). SHOT: 8:30 a.m. WGHT: 12.8 gms. SKL: C.O. STM: 1/1 blue berries MOULT: Nil. ABR: W/T. Nil. SK. NO. 56A. MEGALURULUS. Megalurus: Male AD., 1/2 (yellowish white) SHOT: 7a.m. WGHT: 29.25 gms. SKL: C.O. STM: 3/4 insects. MOULT: Nape C. ABR: W/T Nil.
