BIRDS - NEW CALEDONIA L. Macmillan Page 70 Wailu area: River side flats, grazing paddocks, low scrub, tall trees. 0 - 50' asl. Tuesday, 23rd May, 1939. Weather: Showers, heavy and light off and on slowly becoming finer till later in day showers were at wide intervals. Strong E wind, clouds 100% and only about 600 ft. up. Generally miserable day. Habitat: River side flats with native gardens, low scrub, grazing grass paddocks, scattered tall trees on immediate bank of river. BIRDS: Birds were very irregular and at times active for a few minutes then still for long periods. Only shooting very close to camp which is not a good shooting area. No unusual species seen. Megalurulus: Noted this species was present within a few feet of the rear of native dwellings but was very shy and impossible to observe. Natives resident in these houses did not know the bird when they saw a specimen. This speaks for the shyness of the species. Haliastur: Saw one of this species twice but too far for shooting. Was hawking over grass grazing paddocks of the river flats. Myzomela: Heard but did not see one of this species, only the second record in this area. SK. No. 53A. RHIPIDURA f.b.
