BIRDS - NEW CALEDONIA L. Macmillan Page 64 Wailu Area: River valley, 0-100ft. A.S.L. Saturday, 20th May, 1939. Weather: Dull showery, clouds 100%. All rivers in area running in flood, paddocks more or less under or swimming with water. Fining up a little later in the day. (4p.m.) Habitat: River valley trees along water courses, heathlands, coffee cultivations, pasture paddocks with guava scrubs (5-10ft.), open Noulie forests, Noulie only about 10-15ft. high not very much underbrush in between. Birds: Noted the usual run of birds. Birds were not very active, this weather seems to make them very quiet. Accipiter haploch: One female seen playing on wind over Noulie forest or savanah. Circus: One seen drinking in the first grey dawn at a puddle in forest, shot and lost. Megalurulus: As thought this species in the wet weather moves to the dryer heathlands, seems to entirely leave the wetter grass flats where it is common in dry weather. SK. No. 51A. Corvus: Corvus: Male Ad., 1/2 minus, yellowish white. SHOT: 9 a.m. WGHT: 285.2 gms. W:258 TL:171 SKL: C.O. STM: 1/2, cow dung beetles. MOULT: ABR: W/T. nil. Wing: R. 14,15 L. 13f,15 SK. No. 51B. Myiagra: Myiagra: Female IMM., 1/4 plus. SOFT PARTS: Iris, dark brown; Bill, dark brownish horn, black edge and tip (rather unusual colored bill); L&F, dark grey. SHOT: 9:10 a.m. WGHT: 11.45 gms. W:67 TL:65 SKL: .6 ossif. STM: 3/4, insects. MOULT: nil. ?. ABR: W/T. nil Wing: R. Ø.
