BIRDS - NEW CALEDONIA I L. Macmillan Bay des Pirogues, s.e. part of island COASTAL CAMP, BAY DES PIROGUES 19th October 1938 Weather - Dull, cloudy, overcast, after rain; clouds 60-80 percent. Wind light SE airs. Bush - Barren red soil hills growing a stunted scrub, tussocks, cane grass, bracken fern, etc. Type of open heather and with many flowering shrubs, (Bottlebush, BANKSIA?) and a type of cane with wide corrugated leaf. In valleys and along water courses a few taller shrubs are present and some lantana, but never above 15 feet in height and small in area. On larger flats along rivers a few Nowli trees (native Euclypt) are found growing widely spaced and reaching 20 & 30 feet. BIRDS. LICHMERA is very common, the commonest bird. ♀ appear to be only slightly below ♂ in numbers. A few larger birds with softer, more liquid notes are present and believed to be GUADALCANARIA. PACHYCEPHALA RUFIVENTRIS is present in scrubs and appears fairly common. ZOSTEROPS FLAVIFRONTS is present but only common near lantana or fruit trees. Appears the same as Mare Island. LALAGE - Two were seen and appeared larger and heavier in the tail than Loyalties or New Hebrides. APLONIS - Two seen on wing .1 dark ♂ probably and one brownish, possibly ♀. ERYTHRURA PSITTACEA fairly numerous where grasses are in seed but is shy. 3 HALCYON seen, 3 white unders and a reddish under. 1 CHALCITES heard calling at a distance. 1 HYPOTAENIDEA seen. ARTAMUS fairly common. COLLOCALIA
