Holmes, R 1959 Journal 3 June Drove from Fairbanks, Alaska SE for 150 miles (20 mi No. of Paxson). The habitat changed from a thickly forested region of Populus (aspen) and Picea (Black Spruce) to a sparse alpine tundra characterized by scrub willows + Arctostaphylos uva-ursa (Bear berry) and other herbs. During the transition between these two areas the bottoms of the canyons would be wooded while the tops The ridges or hills were of the tundra-type. 8700-2000. Birds of Aspen-Spruce Habitat - 400-2000 ft (weather clear warm) - Bohemian Waxwing - I'm top of spruce tree, So. of Big Delta Cliff Swallow - always seen near bridges where they were probably nesting Violet-green Swallow - 1 nesting at Big Delta - others seen in Fairbanks and along road.
