23 June Barrow, Alaska
and then go to Wohlsehley Slough
and returned along the beach
ridge and Central Marsh. The snow
is fairly well gone now, only patches
in sheltered spots remain. The
area east of the ridge towards the lagoon
is covered with 2 or 3 inches. I water
and the phalaropes were common here.
Weather was overcast, but no wind.
24 June Barrow, Alaska
0900-1230. Beach Ridge and further
N. to the base (ARL). This area likewise,
is probably boreal tundra. The weather
(clear and sunny) has taken care that
and the melt has proceeded rather
rapidly. The lagoons and lakes
are for the most part still frozen.
There is some water around the edges
and in certain low spots in the
ice mats or collected.
1830-2130.- Drum area and A.A.C.S.
Several Tundra are now breeding
in the vicinity, but nests have not
yet been found. The snow is
completely gone from the major part
of the drum area and only small
patches on the east side remain.
