Holmes, P. 1961 Journal 20 Aug Barrow, Alaska in the lab for the remainder / The day worked w/ samples. 21 Aug Barrow, Alaska Rain began falling last night + continued through the morning but subdued by poor. Weather Windy (16mph - SE) + cold -35-40° Worked in my lab on pond samples all morning. Went to plots + took vacuum sample + brief observation counts - even though everything was soaked. In reference to their, The amount (var our lost 2 weeks) is phenomenal - more than '55 or '60. The tundra is now saturated + there is standing water everywhere. The ponds at the creek plots are a foot or two above sample #1 4/12 June. Many of them have flared over onto the surrounding flat lands so they are not large expanses wet soggy tundra. With the permafrost table being down to 12-15" - + The tundra saturated, travel is difficult - see you work - Permafrost.
