Holmes, R. 1961 Journal 37 9 July Barrow, Alaska and birds seen in the trip are included above. In the afternoon I went to Vuk's Hunt-Story - where I fished 1/2-t. Jayan + 3 smaller birds of clunnie were encountered. Weather today was bright and sunny - with light easterly breeze which began to increase during the day. 10 July Barrow, Alaska Morning spent in finishing sod + pond exper. samples from last Friday - due for another set tomorrow. In the afternoon I went to insect plots to experiment with the vacuum sampler. It was found that the sq.ft. sampler will not pick up adult Apilis - so I will have to try a smaller head to get better suction. Today was extremely hot - to 65°F or so + no wind was blowing until 1430. Mosquitoes were out in full force & made field work very uncomfortable. Crane flies, midges + numerous mosquitoes were found everywhere, but especially around the ponds. ?? Crane flies were seen "standing" in their abdomen - possible laying eggs? Birds were generally scarce - again a Snowy Plover and a Long-tailed Jaeger seen in this area.
