1 July Wales->Kotzebue
hamburger at "Little Pete's Cafe" - The only
place in town that was open. The weather
had picked up since we left Wales,
so that we had a high overcast for
most of the trip with occasional patchy
1 foot rain squalls.
2 July Kotzebue->Barnes, Alaska
After breakfast at Wien's tourist
hotel, we left Kotzebue at 10:30 + hecoba
No. 1 W. toward Cape Thompson. 1110-E
of Cape Krusenstern - 5 Raven, 1 herd &
160 Redners, 1750+ Redner (Copper
mine splutely - Non caribou). Arctic
Terns scattered along the shore +
Red-Thr + Arctic Loons seen in the salt
ponds - nests. p31 Scoup. 1143-as
Kivalina - saw 2 Yellow-billed Loons,
+ 1 Raven.
Arrived Cape Thompson at 12:20,
Joined with Weelamana & Roger
on local birds - (They had collected
adult, nest, eggs of Red-Thr Pipit
this year). Their shorebird activity had
picked up with a large number of Western
Gulls. Red-birds were scarce as were Pectoral, Cattle
The latter did show signs of migration.
